Honors Thesis: Objectivity and Narrative Framing in the Patrick Cannon Mayoral Corruption Case
Undergraduate research on the nature of journalistic objectivity and its connection to how we tell stories. Successfully defended in April of 2016.
Taken from abstract
Journalistic objectivity is understood as a cornerstone of the profession but its boundaries are often nebulous. All reputable journalists see the importance of using unbiased sources and practicing fair reporting methods, however objectivity is also closely linked with how we tell stories and what narrative forms we use to display evidence. This paper is a micro-level analysis of The Charlotte Observer’s coverage of the case of Charlotte ex-mayor Patrick Cannon.
TC Clevenger Undergraduate Honors Conference
Paper submission for the 2015 TC Clevenger Undergraduate Honors Conference sponsored by the Southern States Communication Association. Presented in Spring 2015 in Tampa, Florida.
Taken from abstract
This paper is a micro level case study analysis of The Charlotte Observer’s coverage of the case of Charlotte ex-Mayor Patrick Cannon and builds off the understanding that news stories are crafted into familiar narrative forms to reduce complex issues into an easily distinguishable structure and a meaning.
Research Methods
Content analysis of tweets about Charlotte ex-Mayor Patrick Cannon. I measured the public opinion of the issue and also the genre of the tweets. The statistics I ran supported my hypotheses that news organizations tweet objectively and individuals were more likely to have a negative valence and specific genre.
